Customer Reviews:
Badly contrived ending
I am an avid reader and normally read anywhere from 10 to 15 books a month. This book was a big disappointment. The characters, especially Lena, were just so-so and almost unbelievable. The ending, the last two pages, were, to me, an amateurish attempt at sensationalism. Nothing more. Reading this book is a waste of time.
Low Return on Investment
I purchased this book at the airport as a diversion during a trip. Initially, I was intrigued and it was an easy read. However, as the book progressed, it became unfocused and unrealistic. What was the point of all the attention given to the lawsuit at the beginning of the book? It was never really part of the story and did not adequately explain the transformation of a strong, intelligent woman into a one-dimentional, clingy drone. And, as bodies begin to drop like flies (or, in some cases, get thrown through hotel windows), would no one actually consider bringing in reinforcements to address what is clearly a town out of control? Finally, the ending was more than unsatisfying. It was needlessly depressing and almost felt as though the last 5 pages were written by someone else or had gotten mixed in from another book. Did the author just get tired of writting and decide she had something else she needed to go do? Loyal fans might enjoy this book but anyone looking for a well-written, self-contained story with a logical ending might do well to keep looking. When I consider the time spent reading the book, I don't feel as though there was sufficient return on my investment to have made it worthwhile.
Great book, simply torn by the ending
I've read all of the Grant County series from the beginning. When I bought Beyond Reach, I couldn't wait to read it. The plot was good. It took me awhile to figure out how the story was structured, but once I got past the time frames, I couldn't put the book down.

When I got to the end, I was sad. I woke up this morning trying to figure out why the book ended the way it did so I did some research on Karin Slaughter's website and found a letter written to her fans, which told her reasons. If you haven't read the book, do NOT go read the letter. Read the book first. It explained a lot and, believe it or not, I feel ok with what happened in the end. It is disappointing. It made me angry at first, but once I thought about it I realized that now she's going to be able to move forward, write more Grant County novels and take us, as readers, in an entirely new direction.

And I think it's going to be even better.
Significantly lacking
Since I read this genre specifically for relaxation or escape, this book was a complete dud. The author doesn't have the literary acumen of Martha Grimes or Elizabeth George, and filling in her shortcomings with language by throwing in gruesome and implausible scenes does nothing to make up for the lack.

Her character development dealt largely with the negative aspects of each personality, and almost exclusively highlighted their individual failures.

She also managed to be highly offensive to any moderate or conservative-minded reader--on many levels.

This shipwreck stew of plot holes, unlikely scenarios, awful people with no redeeming qualities, an overwhelmingly dark tenor throughout, and the worst ending imaginable, renders this book's best purpose as kindling.
Plastic characters, fragmented plot
This was my first book by this author. It will be my last. I have to wonder what planet the author grew up on because on the planet where I live, people just don't act this way. A supposedly sophisticated intelligent crook invites a lawman to his town to help investigate something and within a day, for no reason at all, tries to scare him out of town? The crooks kill a person in the beginning who has absolutely no power to hurt them and inexplicably allow Lena to go free when she has the capacity (being a cop and all) to do them real harm?

As for the crooks, the real power, it seems, behind Valentine's little crime ring is his wife Myra who has virtually no dialog at all in the story. Valentine is so unbelievable and does such preposterous things throughout, apparently for the sole reason of setting up the "surprise" toward the end when he is revealed as the ringleader of it all.

Jeffrey and Sara are called out of town all of sudden and end up staying in a hotel that a realistic doctor and police chief would never think of entering. And by the way, after they've been there for three days, Slaughter finally says something about suitcases that (magically) appeared because they sure didn't pack them before they left. The references to Hank's recovery and AA affiliation show a complete misunderstanding of how recovery and AA works. Hank is the sponsor for a newly sober female?? Not in any AA group I've attended!!

I could go on and on but that would require me picking the book back up and refreshing my memory. I think I would be better off just letting myself forget. It shouldn't take long.
