Customer Reviews:
A delightful surprise!
As an aspiring but lazy writer, I particularly enjoy reading first novels--often aware that I may be sadly disappointed. Patricia Wood's novel, LOTTERY, did not disappoint--instead, it was a true delight to read.

Ms. Wood's tender care of Perry L. Crandall was one that gave dignity to a character who symbolizes so many of the invisible people that populate our lives--the "imperfect ones" as defined by our shallow society. As a former nurse, it gave me joy to see so fully developed a character so fully engaged with life. The other characters that populated this fine story only sweetened the pot.

Many other reviewers have told the bones of Perry's story, so I'll not repeat them. Instead, I just want to say thank you to this author for writing a book that was full of truth and full of surprises. I have purchased several copies to give as gifts this Christmas, and I can hardly wait to hear from Ms. Woods again.

Well Done!
Slow Witted
I picked this book up at the airport without high expectations and have still been disappointed. It is a choppy read leaving me with the feeling that i've been talked down to. There are many times the writer attempts wit but always falls short. An earlier reviewer compared this book to Forest Gump, this my friend is no Forest Gump!

Sorry - I never give bad reviews but just couldn't help it with this one.
Couldn't put it down!
This is a great book! I read it in 3 sittings. Reading the story from Perry's point of view and narration makes the book very uniquely written.
The Lottery
This was a good book about a "slow"-not retarded- man who lives by himself, shunned from his family after his caretaker grandmother dies. His life becomes a bit more complicated when he wins the 12 million dollar state lottery.
Told through his eyes, this was a fun, heart-warming story. I would definitely recommend it.
Much more than I expected
I bought this book in the bargain bin at a local bookshop. With a price under $5, I have to be honest - I didn't expect much. Lottery suprised me in many ways. The simplistic writing and short chapters draw you in, making you want to read 'just one more chapter' before putting it down. I read this book in just a couple days. Partly beause it was easy to read, but also because it made me want to keep reading. Sure, it was deliberately endearing, but what else do you expect from a book about a disabled man winning the lottery? This was a great book - I really enjoyed it.

Editorial Reviews:
Perry's IQ is only 76, but he's not stupid. His grandmother taught him everything he needs to know to survive: She taught him to write things down so he won't forget them. She taught him to play the lottery every week. And, most important, she taught him whom to trust. When Gram dies, Perry is left orphaned and bereft at the age of thirty-one. Then his weekly Washington State Lottery ticket wins him 12 million dollars, and he finds he has more family than he knows what to do with. Peopled with characters both wicked and heroic who leap off the pages, Lottery is a deeply satisfying, gorgeously rendered novel about trust, loyalty, and what distinguishes us as capable.
